Mikhail Shumov was born in Moscow, where he studied with Zoia Kuimova at the Gnessin College of Music, and Igor Gavrysh at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music in London, under the tutelage of Aleksander Boyarsky, where he also played in the RCM orchestra under the direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen and Vladimir Yurovsky. Mikhail has worked with renowned musicians such as Natalia Gutman, Stefan Popov, Denis Brott, Henk Guittart, Gilbert Kalish, Alasdair Tait, Don and Vivian Weilerstein (Banff Summer Arts Festival).
Mikhail was principal cellist at the “MTCC Pavla Slobodkina” Orchestra (2003-2008), having taught at the Gnesin College of Music for three years. He has also collaborated in the Orchestra Festival “Opera Ischia” (2007) as the principal cellist, with conductors T. Rimes (Washington National Opera), L. Arner (Metropolitan Opera) and P. Mazzagatti (New-York Dicapo Opera) and with Gulbenkian Orchestra (2012) under the direction of Lawrence Foster and Joana Carneiro.
He is currently the principal cellist of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul.
