Rui Pinheiro, Principal Conductor

Rui Pinheiro has been the Principal Conductor of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul since January 2015. Between 2010 and 2012 he was Associate Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (United Kingdom). During these years he conducted the orchestra in more than twenty important programmes, including the concerts Hall of Fame and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II celebrations. In Lisbon, he conducted the Orquestra do Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa (2005-2008) and, in London, he was the Musical Director of the Ensemble Serse (company of baroque opera on epoch instruments) and founded the Ensemble Disquiet, dedicated to the promotion of contemporary Portuguese music (2008-2010).

In Portugal, Rui Pinheiro has conducted all the leading orchestras. Recent highlights of his career include conducting several concerts with the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, namely, the closing concert of the Dias da Música festival and the commemorative concerts of the 20’s anniversary of OSP, a Verdi/Wagner programme at the Festival ao Largo, alongside Teatro Nacional de S. Carlos Choir, and the Rachmaninoff and Brahms’s concerts with Artur Pizarro, which were broadcast live on Antenna 2. With the Gulbenkian Orchestra he conducted performances of Holst's The Planets, Victor Gama's Vela 6911, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, at Festival de Música, Leiria, concerts of the Prémio Jovens Músicos (2013) that included Freitas Branco’s 1st Symphony, which were broadcast live on Portuguese national television RTP2, Firebird by Stravinsky (2014), Concierto de Aranjuez with Miloš Karadagli?, Souvenance with the Anouar Brahem Quartet, Adriana Partimpim with Adriana Calcanhoto (2015) and Retiro with Rodrigo Leão at the Porto and Lisbon Coliseu (2015). He conducted symphonies by Beethoven and Mendelssohn with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at Festival ao Largo (2013), and he led the Orquestra Clássica da Madeira Christmas and New Year’s concerts as well as the COM’s 50th Anniversary Gala Concert, broadcast on RTP2 (2013-2014). He also conducted a concert with the orchestra Filarmonia das Beiras at the Leiria Music Festival in 2014.

Following his operatic debut with the Donizetti's La fille du Régiment production at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, in 2014, he directed the Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela production of the Los Diamantes de la Corona by Barbieri, in 2015.

His most outstanding projects with the Orquestra Clássica do Sul include the direction of the complete Piano Concerts by Beethoven, the 4th Symphony by Mahler in partnership with the Universidade de Évora, concerts with Vitorino, Janita Salomé and the Cantadores do Redondo group, Carlos Guilherme and Kátia Guerreiro, and the direction of the performances of Rita by Donizetti with the All’Opera Company and Matrioska with the Companhia de Dança do Algarve.

Highlights of his performances in the United Kingdom include concerts with the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, at the 2012 Fishguard International Festival, at the Philharmonia Orchestra’s Vienna - City of Dreams Festival, and presentations in BBC Proms Plus, broadcast live on BBC, Radio 3 (2009-2010).

A staunch champion of contemporary music, Rui Pinheiro has worked closely with composers such as Kenneth Hesketh, Alison Kay, Augusta Read Thomas, Stephen MacNeff, Luís Soldado, Bruno Gil Soeiro, Luis Tinoco, Nuno Côrte-Real, Isabel Soveral, and Clotidlde Rosa having conducted their works in several world premieres. Currently, he also conducts regularly the GMCL – Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa.

In 2016 Rui Pinheiro conducted several concerts with: Orquestra Clássica do Sul; Orquestra Gulbenkian - premiere of the opera 3 Mil Rios by Victor Gama; Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa - modern premiere of 'Te Deum' by Marcos Portugal; Oltenia State Philharmonic Orchestra, in Craiova (Romania) and the Ensemble KNM Berlin (Germany).

After completing his musical studies in Portugal (a graduation in piano at ESMAE and a Master of Musical Arts at Universidade Nova de Lisboa) and in Hungary (post-graduation in piano and chamber musica at Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest), Rui Pinheiro completed a Master degree in Orchestra Conducting at the Royal College of Music, in London, where he studied under Peter Stark and Robin O’Neill. He also worked with Jorma Panula and Colin Metters. As an assistant conductor, he worked with Sir Roger Norrington, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Vladimir Jurowski and John Wilson, among others.
