President Message

It seems to be attributed to Seneca, Roman philosopher of the fourth century BC, the assertion that ‘every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end’. Since this is not the proper place for the discussion of the hypothetical authorship of that statement, and taking it as true, we know that the beginning of this New Year is, for us who witness it, the natural follow-up of all the others we have already lived. However, tradition tells us to celebrate the beginning of a New Year with renewed vows of hope, prosperity and happiness. Also for this reason, I would like to wish you all, on behalf of the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, a happy and prosperous Year of 2019.

In the year that we have now begun, we will maintain and even reinforce our promise to contribute to the spread of the sounds of erudite music, as well as our commitment to promoting the taste for Music. To achieve this goal, we will continue to carry out several concerts dedicated to the dissemination of the works of great composers, not forgetting the inclusion of pieces signed by Portuguese musicians in various programmes.

Through the recent publication of the Law that awarded the Orquestra Clássica do Sul the formal Regional Orchestra Statute, 2019 will be the year of broadening the scope of our mission and objectives, after having seen recognized our role as a relevant cultural actor in the regions of the Algarve and the Alentejo. The happy decision to include the OCS in a national strategy aimed at ensuring the sustainability of regional orchestras has positive implications for the dynamism of the cultural practices we carry out in partnership with other entities, public or private.

The Orquestra Clássica do Sul can now clearly be proud of its role as a tool for regional socio-cultural valorisation, and, in each of its presentations, express the results of the course of excellence that it has long decided to initiate, with the support of regional institutions.

We are an Orchestra at the service of the institutions, the residents and the visitors of the Algarve and the Alentejo. We exist because Music is a greater cultural goal, and we promise, in this New Year, to continue to follow the score of the great sounds!

Happy New year to all.
