FRENCH MUSIC FOR WINDS | Fuseta

Works by C. E. LEFÈBVRE, T. DUBOIS e C. GOUNOD

Programme Notes

Born in Paris, Charles Edouard Lefèbvre studied at the conservatory with C. Gounod and A. Thomas. In 1870, he was awarded the Prix de Rome together with Henri Maréchal for the Cantata Le Jugement de Dieu. Later in 1895 he succeeded Benjamin Godard as director of chamber music at the Paris Conservatory. Lefèbvre composed more than 100 works, including a symphony, orchestral and wind suites, organ pieces, piano, chamber music, operas and dances, and the suite we present today is a good example of his musical writing.

Also French, Théodore Dubois was a composer, organist, music teacher and author of several books on musical theory widely used in musical pedagogy for decades. Like C. Lefèbvre, after studying at the Paris Conservatory, he won France’s top music prize, the Prix de Rome in 1861. As a composer, he was recognized for his good taste, considered, however, not very original or inspired. Although he aimed to be known as an opera composer, he ended up being celebrated for his sacred and liturgical music compositions.

From Charles Gounod, we present The Little Symphony, commissioned by Paul Taffanel, friend of Gounod and a very reputed flute teacher at the Paris Conservatory. Gounod chose an instrumentation that approached the scores of some of Mozart’s serenades for wind instruments - two oboes, two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons - to which he added a single flute, in deference to his illustrious friend Taffanel. The Little Symphony is a miniature evocation of the complete classical symphony characteristic of the late nineteenth century, delicate, evocative and elegantly colored.
