"The Genius and Mental Health" is an event organised by the Orquestra do Algarve and dedicated to mental health week, in partnership with the FCHS (UALG) and the Luso-American Development Foundation - FLAD. The two-day event is divided between the cities of Faro (24 November) and Lagos (25 November), where it will end with a concert comented by Maestro Martim Sousa Tavares, with a programme specially chosen for this occasion.

MARTIM SOUSA TAVARES
Chief Conductor
Martim Sousa Tavares was born in Lisbon in 1991.
Graduated in Music Science and Orchestral Conducting between Lisbon, Milan, and Chicago, he completed his academic path with honours and Fulbright and Eckstein Foundation scholarships.
He founded in 2014 in Brescia the Orchestra di Maggio, followed in 2019 by the Orquestra Sem Fronteiras, based in Idanha-a-Nova and which has performed in over 100 venues between Portugal, Spain, and Brazil, having won in 2022 the Charlemagne Youth Prize of the European Parliament and the Mirpuri Foundation music award.
He is the chief conductor of Orquestra do Algarve since January 2023 and his recent activity includes concerts with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras and Orquestra do Norte.
He is very active in the field of cultural communication, having signed more than 150 programmes in RTP2, RTP Palco and Antena 2. In the Observador newspaper he maintains a newsletter and a weekly podcast: the most listened to in Portugal in the field of music.
He collaborates regularly with the theatre and, as an author, the following works stand out: the music for Vita & Virginia, presented at Teatro São Luiz in 2021, the children's opera O Anel do Unicórnio, premiered in 2021 and presented in seven cities, and Uma Outra Bela Adormecida, based on the short story by Agustina Bessa-Luís, in a co-production of Teatro Nacional de São João, Lu.Ca - Teatro Luís de Camões, Cineteatro Louletano and Centro Cultural Raiano which will premier in January 2023.
In the field of artistic direction, he conceived A Boca do Lobo, a classical music cycle at Lux-Frágil, took over the coordination of the cultural programme of Aveiro's application to become the European Capital of Culture in 2027 and is the director of the Sintra Festival.
FLAD - LUSO-AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPMENT
FLAD is the result of the strong relationship between Portugal and the United States of America.
Longtime allies, the two countries have had a close relationship for several decades, which gained intensity after the Second World War, with Portugal’s access to the Marshall and OECE Plan in 1948, and inclusion in NATO in 1949, together with the broad economic aid program granted to Portugal for its democratic consolidation, after the 25th of April of 1974.
But one of the most remarkable moments for FLAD to be born is the Cooperation and Defense Agreement between Portugal and the United States of America, in 1983. In it the Portuguese government accepted the military facilities intended by the American government, such as the continuation of the North-American stay at the Lajes Base, until 1991. On the other hand, the USA agreed to grant a set of support (military, economic and energetic), among which was the creation of the Luso-American Development Foundation.
The formalization of the creation of FLAD took place on the 20th of May of 1985, with the approval of the Decree-Law n.º 168/85. The Luso-American Development Foundation was thus constituted as a Portuguese institution, financially autonomous and private, designed to contribute to the national development, through the promotion of scientific, technical, cultural, educational, commercial and business cooperation between the two countries.
On that date, FLAD had a capital of 85 million euros. The management of this endowment allows the autonomous exercise of FLAD’s mission, to which other revenues from statutory activities also contribute.
Member of the main national and international networks of foundations (The Portuguese Foundation Center – CPF; The European Foundation Center – EFC), FLAD is recognized as one of the most important Portuguese foundations. It has opened doors to the United States for almost 35 years, developing Portugal, the Portuguese and Portuguese descendants, in partnership with leading institutions, while supporting projects of recognized value.
