What is it about romantic music that makes us fall in love with it? Following in the vein of Valentine's Day, this programme presents some of the most passionate music of the 19th century, ideal for discovering exactly what the romantic ethos is all about.

MARTIM SOUSA TAVARES

Maestro

 

Martim Sousa Tavares was born in Lisbon in 1991.

Graduated in Music Science and Orchestral Conducting between Lisbon, Milan, and Chicago, he completed his academic path with honours and Fulbright and Eckstein Foundation scholarships.

He founded in 2014 in Brescia the Orchestra di Maggio, followed in 2019 by the Orquestra Sem Fronteiras, based in Idanha-a-Nova and which has performed in over 100 venues between Portugal, Spain, and Brazil, having won in 2022 the Charlemagne Youth Prize of the European Parliament and the Mirpuri Foundation music award.

He is the chief conductor of Orquestra do Algarve since January 2023 and his recent activity includes concerts with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras and Orquestra do Norte.

He is very active in the field of cultural communication, having signed more than 150 programmes in RTP2, RTP Palco and Antena 2. In the Observador newspaper he maintains a newsletter and a weekly podcast: the most listened to in Portugal in the field of music.

He collaborates regularly with the theatre and, as an author, the following works stand out: the music for Vita & Virginia, presented at Teatro São Luiz in 2021, the children's opera O Anel do Unicórnio, premiered in 2021 and presented in seven cities, and Uma Outra Bela Adormecida, based on the short story by Agustina Bessa-Luís, in a co-production of Teatro Nacional de São João, Lu.Ca - Teatro Luís de Camões, Cineteatro Louletano and Centro Cultural Raiano which will premier in January 2023.

In the field of artistic direction, he conceived A Boca do Lobo, a classical music cycle at Lux-Frágil, took over the coordination of the cultural programme of Aveiro's application to become the European Capital of Culture in 2027 and is the director of the Sintra Festival.

RUI BAETA

Baritone

With orchestras such as the Concertgebouw Camerata, Camerata de Lyon, Porto National, Portuguese Symphony, Metropolitan and the Gulbenkian Foundation, Rui Baeta has developed his artistic career in the main concert halls in Portugal and abroad.

He began his musical studies at the Algarve Regional Conservatoire Maria Campina and the National Conservatoire in Lisbon. He graduated with a specialised degree in singing from the Higher School of Music in Lisbon and studied at the Mozarteum Salzburg in Austria, the Fondation Hindemith in Switzerland and the Academie Francis Poulenc in France. With the pianist Paulo Pacheco, he won the First Young Musicians Prize - Chamber Music Higher Level.  At the age of 18 he joined the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Choir, where he began his career as a soloist.

At the age of 25 he made his debut at the National Theatre of São Carlos and since then he has added to his vast operatic and concert repertoire the main baritone roles and solos such as: The Magic Flute, Mozart; La Bohéme, Puccini; I Pagliacci, Leoncavallo; Carmina Burana, Orff; Madama Butterfly, Puccini; Idomeneo, Mozart; Les Contes D'Hoffmann, Offenbach; Hänsel und Gretel, Humperdinck; Ein Deutsches Requiem, Brahms; Petite Messe Solennelle, Rossini; Requiem, Fauré; Requiem, Mozart; Requiem, Bontempo; Weihnachtsoratorium and Ich habe Genug, Bach; Les Nuits D'Été, Berlioz; Des Knaben Wunderhorn and Eines Fahrenden Gesellen, Mahler; As Variedades de Proteu, António Teixeira (CD); O Corvo (CD), A Tabacaria (CD), O Regresso da Norma (CD), As Flores do Mal (CD), Beatriz, Luís Soldado; O Monstro no Labirinto, Jonathan Dove; O Manifesto Nada (CD), António Sousa Dias; and Missa Grande by Marcos de Portugal (CD).

In 2019 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the City of Faro and established the Algarve Orchestra Community Choir, of which he is musical director and vocal coach.

He is currently the artistic director of the Orchestra.
