MARCO PEREIRA

Cello

Marco Pereira had his first experience of the cello at the age of 13 at the EPMVC. He went on to study at the ANSO in Lisbon with Paulo Gaio Lima, where he completed his degree with a final grade of 20 points, followed by studies in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia with Natalia Shakovskaya. Throughout his career he had the opportunity to work with the cello's greatest masters, such as Natalia Gutman, Gary Hoffman, Phillipe Muller and Ivan Moneghetti, amongst many others. String quartets have featured heavily in Marco Pereira's career from an early age, peaking when he formed the Matosinhos String Quartet as a founding member. Said quartet was named "Rising Stars" in ECHO's 2015/2016 season, where he had the opportunity to play a series of concerts in Europe's main concert halls, such as the Barbican (London), Concertgebouwn (Amsterdam) and Musikverein (Vienna). Marco Pereira has performed innumerable solo concerts, recitals and contests that have propelled his career, earning him a prestigious reputation in the Portuguese and international music community. Among the most notable competitions was the JMP competition, where he won the Chamber Music Prize in 1999 and the Cello - Advanced Level Prize in 2003, the year in which he also received the "Maestro Silva Pereira Prize". At international level, he won 1st prize at the "Liezen International Wettbewerb für Violoncello" in Austria, in the "III Konzert" category. He also won 1st prize at the "VI Certamen de Musica de Camara del Sardinero" in Santander in 2006. He has also been honoured at the Estoril Julio Cardona Interpretation Competition, amongst others. He has performed solo with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Joensuu Orchestra (Finland), Atlantic Music Festival Orchestra (USA), among others. He has recorded numerous CDs for solo cello, string quartet and other ensembles. He is the solo cello/chief of staff of the Gulbenkian Orchestra. He is a regular guest with the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liege and the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest as a bandleader. He has lectured on the cello at the University of Aveiro and the University of Minho. He is currently a lecturer at the ANSO.
