The phrase “And now we welcome the new year full of things that have never been”, was written by the German poet Rainer Maria von Rilke, and illustrates the human need to believe in the possibility of a fresh start. Just as Nature, which every year awakens to a new cycle in spring, so humans, at the beginning of each new year, celebrated according to the calendars of different cultures, feel the call for a time that commemorates the opportunity for change, the existence of new possibilities, or simply offers us a space for renewal. In the year that it reaches institutional adulthood, the Orquestra Clássica do Sul salutes the arrival of 2020 with the belief in consolidating its belonging to the territories of the Algarve and the Alentejo, the hope of continually evolving its path towards performative excellency, and the expectation that its latest projects - the fortunate creation of the OCS Choir and the establishment of an Education Department - will continue to prove essential to the broadening of its cultural activity, in order to fully fulfil its mission, as an institution at the service of the publics of the Algarve and Alentejo regions.
The 2019/2020 music season, keeping Rui Pinheiro as the principal conductor and his successful bet in structuring the programme by thematic cycles, includes innovative aspects, both in the repertoire, in the concert formats, and in the partnerships agreed. Resuming the ‘Solistas da OCS’, ‘Musica e Natureza’, ‘Clássicos Light’ and ‘Sinfonias Clássicas’ cycles, among others, the OCS also revisits this season composers who were 'modern' in their time, and proposes its audience to listen to works by contemporary composers who may become tomorrow's 'classics' in the ‘Música e Modernidade’ cycle.
As part of the partnerships, the 2019/2020 season has the prestigious collaborations of composer Bruno Soeiro, fado singer Kátia Guerreiro and tenor Rui Baeta, who coordinates the OCS Choir, a choral group widely applauded in all its performances.
For the Orquestra Clássica do Sul, this New Year is, for all I have listed, a time for renewing successful expectations and, at the same time, a space for celebration of what was and is expected to be within the framework of the promotion and dissemination of classical music, as well as Culture in the Algarve and Alentejo.
